Rain, Rain, Go Away?

As we’ve entered the dog days of summer, it’s essential to keep our furry friends safe and healthy by keeping a few things in mind with the ever changing weather here in Texas.

While we are all grateful for the rain it also brings its own set of challenges for pets. The rainy weather can also have impacts on your pets’ well-being.

Do your furry friends love to play in puddles and run around in the rain? It’s always fun to see the rain zoomies around the backyard, but unfortunately with rain also come mosquitos, fleas, and ticks. The humidity brings them out of hiding and can increase the amount you may see on your pets.

Ensuring they’re on prevention will protect them from all sorts of diseases the creepy crawlers spread. Mosquitoes can transmit heartworms, which are nasty things that like to live in the hearts and lungs of pets. While they can be treated it’s harsh on them and a challenge for us as well. Fleas and ticks can also spread lots of issues varying from skin allergies to lyme disease, and can also be a huge battle to remove from our homes. Preventing them all together is the best way to enjoy our summers in the sun.

When outdoor activities are limited, it’s crucial to keep your dogs and cats mentally stimulated and physically active indoors. Interactive toys, obstacle courses, and training sessions are a great way to connect and engage their minds when stuck inside. Bad weather can be frustrating for all of us but our furry companions can make even the rainiest days feel sunny.

Tips from Dr. B

Make sure your pet’s are on heartworm, flea, and tick preventions all year round! Just because some months are higher risk doesn’t mean the risk ever goes away.

Watch out for the heat! Summer months are especially hot so ensure there’s always water and shade when outside. Heat stroke is a dangerous thing that happens quick.

Don’t forget to let the hose run for a few minutes when filling up bowls, pools, or tubs. The water in there can get extremely hot and it’s not always something we think of when trying to keep our pets cool.
