“August is like the Sunday of Summer”
Summer has ended but the Texas heat hasn’t! September is still a VERY HOT month down South. Our temperatures will remain in the high 90’s and still some triple digits! We wanted to remind you to stay aware and be vigilant with your pets in the heat.
Here are some key points to keep in mind:
Heatstroke is still real. Pets, especially dogs, can easily suffer from heatstroke. Exercise is one of the most common causes, so don’t start throwing that ball for extended periods of time just yet. Even though it might seem a few degrees cooler, keep in mind that the asphalt and sand is still hot and can burn your pets paw pads. Stick to grassy areas when walking.
Make sure your pet has plenty of shade and a place to get away from the sun.
Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
Don’t leave your pets in the car. This goes for any time of the year! The temperature in the car can rise an average of 20 degrees in 10 minutes. A 90-degree temp can quickly turn into 110! Nope!
There are certain breeds that are considered high-risk. Those guys with short noses (like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persian cats), are more susceptible to heat-related issues due to their anatomy. Make sure to take extra precautions with these breeds.
Remember that different animals have different heat tolerances, so as the owner, you know them best. If you think your pet is suffering from any heat-related issues or if you have any questions, feel free to contact us.
Tips from Dr. B
Beware of snakes! If you think your pet has been bitten by a snake, please contact us immediately.
Remember the water in the hose is HOT! Let it run for a few minutes before filling up that water bowl or giving your dog a bath outside. I think that is something we all commonly forget.
Thanks for being a part of the Watermark family, we are here when you need us! #WVH
