“Baby it’s cold outside”
Well, some days as we are in Texas! Taking care of your pets during December involves some specific considerations. There are a few things to keep in mind to help keep your pets happy and healthy during the holiday season.
December can bring cold temperatures. Ensure your pets have a warm and dry place to rest. If you have any outdoor animals, make sure they have proper shelter and access to fresh wash water that won’t freeze.
Those Christmas trees are oh so beautiful! Cats love to bat at the ornaments, eat the tree and tinsel and even climb them on occasion. Make sure your tree is securely anchored just in case! Don’t keep any of those breakables near the bottom of the tree as your dog’s tail can quickly take out your favorite Lenox ornament.
Be aware that many Christmas plants are toxic to pets. Poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly are just to name a few.
The holidays can be a stressful time for everyone, including your pets. Amidst the hustle and bustle, try to maintain your pet’s regular routine as much as possible. This provides a sense of stability and comfort. Changes in routine, visitors, or travel can stress some pets.
If you’re hosting gatherings, provide a quiet and safe space where your pet can retreat if they need a break from the festivities.
Giving your pet a gift under the tree this year? Avoid toys with small parts that can be easily chewed off or giant bones they have never had before. Be mindful of gift wrap and packaging, as pets may be tempted to chew.
Tips from Dr. B
Christmas and New Years tend to be the most traveled holidays. If you’re traveling with your pet, make sure they have proper identification, medical records, medications and are comfortable in a carrier or car. If your pet is staying home, arrange for a trusted pet sitter or boarding facility.
With the holidays comes all the yummy treats and homemade goodies! Remember to keep these human treats out of reach! Chocolate, grapes, raisins, and certain artificial sweeteners aren’t good for our four-legged friends! Also, remind family and guests not to feed table scraps to your pets.
Have a happy and safe holiday season from the WVH family to yours!
